Is Washington D.C a state? Or is it a city? What is Washington D.C? D.C. means The District of Columbia if I’m not mistaken?

Washington D.C is the capital of the United States and is located on the east coast.
Washington State, on the other hand, is on the west coast. North-west part of the USA.
